Flash Flooding in Yemen

Every year during the summer months, seasonal monsoons bring heavy rains throughout the country of Yemen. This year, however, has led to disastrous flash flooding in major governorates, such as Sana'a, Aden, Ta'izz, and many more.

Refugees and Yemeni citizens have been forced to relocate form their homes, leaving many with or without very few belongings. Along with people being displaced, many historic buildings--including the UNESCO World Heritage Site building that lies in Sana'a--are also being destroyed in the disaster.

Despite the deadly consequences of the flooding and monsoons, Yemen still struggles to receive the aid it desperately needs. The introduction of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and cholera has done little to cease the conflict that the five year-long civil war has brought. Saudi Arabia has continued its blockade along the northern border (limiting the amount of humanitarian aid that can delivered to civilians) while the Houthis continue their on the ground assault against civilians, immigrants, and any anti-Houthi groups.

If you would like to support Yemen during these troubling times, please consider donating to Mona Relief, Saba Relief, or the Free Yemen Initiative. These organizations work on the ground in Yemen to deliver supplies to refugees and citizens in need.
