ABOUT

YEMEN.

You've heard it in passing in the office. You've seen donation requests about it in your mail. You've seen its burning ruins on the news. But at the end of the day, when your news feed returns to local events, this foreign country disappears from headlines until the next painful record in death counts forces news channels to revisit it. Which begs the question: what is going on in Yemen?

Located on the southwestern tip of the Arabian peninsula, Yemen faces one of the most devastating humanitarian crises in the 21st century. Civilians and refugees suffer from a six year long civil war, cholera outbreak, famine, and now the novel coronavirus that is severely under reported. On top of the civil war between the Houthis and legitimate Yemeni government, foreign governments (such as the U.S., UK, France, UAE, and more) have also been funding the Saudi Arabia coalition without holding their and the Houthis' accountable for war crimes--leading to the death of more than thousands of civilians in the process and limiting the transfer of aid to those in need.

Despite this, Yemen's situation is hardly spoken of in the global community.

In an age where civil rights are being spoken of now more than ever, individuals have been promoting awareness of the Yemen crisis on social media platforms. However, due to the ever evolving nature of media trends, it can be difficult to keep track of important information. It was this difficulty that led to the creation of the Healing Yemen project.

Healing Yemen is an independently run non-profit project that consolidates key information and data in one place for people to access more easily. It not only summarizes the war's history, but also provides educational resources and links to organizations to provide insight on how to get involved in the crisis. Healing Yemen also encourages discussions on complex subjects, such as discrepancies in humanitarian aid; foreign government involvement; developing sustainable solutions; and other ways to support Yemen. While the solution to Yemen's crises cannot be solved overnight, we believe that the start to any conversation begins with an open heart and getting to know the faces of the people behind the headlines.

We encourage others to express their concerns and to continue to promote awareness through listening, learning, and acting. In order for true change to occur in any setting, we must first acknowledge injustices for what they are. Accept faults where they fall. And turn silence into compassion.

A future worthy of love cannot be formed, unless we become the healing hands we needed so long ago.
